The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has announced that this year’s Brake Safety Week will take place from August 25 to 31. Brake Safety Week is a comprehensive initiative aimed at inspecting and enforcing commercial motor vehicle and driver safety regulations, with a specific focus on brake systems and components. Ensure your vehicle's brake system is in top condition to avoid any violations.

Throughout the week, CVSA-certified inspectors will conduct routine commercial motor vehicle inspections, with a strong emphasis on brake systems. Until the issues are fixed, vehicles with brake-related violations will be taken out of service.

This year’s Brake Safety Week will particularly concentrate on the condition of brake linings and pads, both of which can lead to vehicle violations and impact a motor carrier’s safety rating. Furthermore, some jurisdictions will be using performance-based brake testers (PBBT), which are advanced tools that measure braking performance under real-world conditions, to assess braking performance.

In addition to the inspection and enforcement efforts, educational outreach by law enforcement agencies, transportation safety organizations, and individual officers will be an integral part of the campaign. CVSA aims to raise awareness and educate drivers, motor carriers, owner-operators, and mechanics about the importance of brake safety.

To support the educational efforts, resources such as an inspector’s inspection procedure, a checklist for inspecting S-cam brakes, information about components of the vehicle that inspectors will check, and a flyer with brake lining and pad tips are available for download on the CVSA website.

The data collected during Brake Safety Week, including brake inspections and violations, will be reported to CVSA for analysis. The primary goal of Brake Safety Week is to enhance commercial motor vehicle brake safety and reduce roadway crashes caused by braking system issues. This is achieved through rigorous roadside inspections and educational outreach to promote proper brake inspection, maintenance, and operation.
