Getting Your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
Shipping is the backbone of almost every major industry, and trucking is a huge part of that. But before you can get behind the wheel of a big rig, you need a commercial driver’s license, or CDL. We here at McCandless Truck Center know that can sound imposing, so we’ve put together a basic guide on obtaining your CDL. To learn more, or to see the trucks we have for sale, contact our stores all across Colorado and Wyoming, today!
1: Requirements
First, check out the CDL testing manual and look at the Requirements section to learn how to qualify. Some of these include a minimum age, certain physical capabilities, and so on. These can vary a bit by state, so make sure you’re looking at the right manual!
2: Permit
Like with a normal license, you can get a Class A CDL permit by passing a few written exams. Your driving record for the last ten years will also be looked at and you’ll have to prove you’re medically qualified for the permit. Once you get it, you’re another step down the path to getting your full CDL.
Most states’ written tests include a General Knowledge test, one on Air Brakes, and Combination Vehicles.
3: Training
With your permit, it’s time to start driving with a qualified CDL holder. You’ll need to have the CDP (permit) for at least 14 days before you can apply for the full license, so take the time to practice with your qualified driver. You might need a certain number of hours of experience before you can get your license, depending on the state.
There are also CDL training programs to help you get the information you need to pass the written exam and get a head start on the skill-based tests.
4: Endorsements
There will also be a CDL endorsement test based on the specific endorsement you want. Some of these endorsements, such as the Hazardous Materials endorsement, will also require a background check before they’re added to your license. The endorsements section of your training manual should have more information.
5: Pass The Skills Test
Finally, you’ll have to take a three-part driving exam that includes a pre-trip inspection, basic control skills, and a driving test. The driving test will either happen at a state CDL test site or an approved third-party site in the state. You’ll be tested for the exact vehicle you want to be licensed for. Different states have different limits on how much time needs to pass after a failed test to try again, so be sure you know that information if you don’t do well.
Once you pass these, you get your CDL, either that day or later in the mail. If it’s through the mail, you can’t drive until you’ve got it, so remember to be patient.
