This last Tuesday, Navistar launched the first Traton group product in North America, the S13 Integrated Powertrain. This marks a huge step toward carbon neutrality and it will be the last internal combustion engine that Navistar designs from the ground up.

Göran Nyberg, the executive vice president of commercial operations, was the one to announce Navistar’s latest solution to sustainable mobility. Nyberg noted that many customers have voiced their concerns about the escalating issue of climate change. The S13 Integrated Powertrain is designed to meet the demand of customers who desire to reduce their carbon footprint while still being a reliable, capable, and practical commercial vehicle that meets and exceeds the needs and expectations of customers.

The promise of the S13 is its superior operating economy, simplicity, and exceptional performance.  The main features include:

  • Fuel efficiency gains up to 15% compared to the first generation International A26 engine.
  • T14: 14- speed automated manual transmission, this is the brain of the powertrain. It optimizes the performance and adjusts itself to loads and road conditions.
  • The cab itself has new adjustments that reduce airflow: lower skirt trims, a new grill, longer chassis skirts, and a roof extender.

New Cab Design

Navistar predicts that by 2030, 50% of their new vehicle sales will be zero emissions. By 2040, they believe the number will be 100%.  This clean sheet design is meant to offer more with less and not compromise performance. Navistar’s partnership with Traton allowed them to create this modular design. Mathias Carlbaum, President and CEO, notes how modular systems allow for mass customization and offerings, equating to a long-term competitive edge.

Navistar is excited to move forward and believes the S13 is the catalyst to providing a simple and comprehensive ownership solution.

“We’re moving at an unprecedented speed of data-driven, autonomous, and zero emission reality. We think that change is good, we like the change—we embrace it at Navistar” - Mathias Carlbaum, President and CEO.
