Staying Healthy as a Truck Driver
A healthy commercial truck driver is a safe driver. Maintaining your health helps you stay alert and quickly respond to incoming hazards, which helps reduce the chances of an accident.
It can be tough being healthy on the road, but the following tips can help!
Exercise at Rest Stops
Each time you pull over for a break, dedicate some time to working out. This can be as simple as a brisk walk, but you can also do a variety of equipment-free exercises. For example, sets of squats, pushups, and crunches can help you stay active.
All of that sitting inside your truck cab takes its toll on your body, but regular exercise can help reduce the negative impact of prolonged sitting and help you stay focused while driving.
Limit Caffeine
Coffee, energy drinks, and other caffeinated beverages seem like a great resource for the tired trucker. But the artificial energy boost often leads to dehydration and an eventual energy crash, which ends up making it harder to stay alert.
Try to consistently get enough restful sleep, which will help reduce the times that you reach for a caffeinated drink.
Focus On Quality Food Over Convenience
When driving your truck, it's tempting to get fast food meals or highly processed snacks. These options are convenient, but they come at a cost. In the short term, unhealthy food can make you lethargic. In the long run, they can be incredibly damaging to your health and longevity.
That's not to say you have to resign yourself to eating bland, boring food on your truck routes. But it is important to aim for a balanced diet full of nutritious food.
