Colorado and Wyoming State Chain Law Resources
It's always important for both fleet managers and truck drivers to stay up-to-date and familiar with chain laws in the states their trucks travel and the routes they normally drive.
We've created this page as a resource for updates and information on chain laws as they apply to commercial motor vehicles specifically within Colorado and Wyoming,
but have priovided information on other states across the U.S. as well at the bottom of the page.
While higher elevations of Colorado can receive snowfall year round, chain laws are in effect for commercial vehicles from September 1st through May 31st.
During this time, all commercial vehicles traveling on I-70 between the Dotsero exit (mile marker 133) and the Morrison exit (259), must carry sufficient chains to be in compliance with the Colorado chain law.

Wyoming's chain law includes two levels of restrictions that can be implemented on specific highway sections when conditions warrant.
- LEVEL 1 can restrict travel to vehicles equipped with tire chains or vehicles with adequate snow tires when conditions are hazardous.
- LEVEL 2 is declared when conditions deteriorate to an "extremely hazardous" rating. For commercial vehicles, this requires chains be on at least two of the drive wheels, at opposite ends of the same drive axle.
